Is HappyHorse-1.0 Open Source?

Short answer: open access, verifiably. Open weights, partially. Open source in the full promised sense — not yet confirmed. Here is the claim‑by‑claim record.

Claimed vs. verified

Hosted API access (T2V, I2V, editing, reference-to-video)

Verified

Live on fal since April 27, 2026 as official API partner; playground usable without an API key. First-party access via Alibaba Cloud Bailian and the Qwen app.

#1 on Artificial Analysis Video Arena (T2V and I2V, no-audio)

Verified

Debuted anonymously April 7, 2026 and topped both boards — the only model to hold both simultaneously that month.

Developed by Alibaba (Taotian Group), led by Zhang Di

Verified

Confirmed by press reporting on April 10, 2026. Zhang Di previously served as VP at Kuaishou and technical architect of Kling AI.

Weights published on Hugging Face

Partially verified

Repos exist under more than one org (happyhorse-ai, happyhorse-lab) with gated access. Which org is official has not been established — treat unverified mirrors as untrusted.

Apache-2.0 license permitting commercial use

Not confirmed

Widely reported, but no canonical license file has shipped alongside a verified official release. Do not build commercial plans on this until it lands.

Full release: base model + distilled variant + super-resolution + inference code

Not confirmed

This is the announced scope. As of July 17, 2026 no canonical GitHub repository contains all four artifacts.

Timeline

  1. Apr 7, 2026

HappyHorse-1.0 appears anonymously on the Artificial Analysis Video Arena and immediately ranks #1 in both text-to-video and image-to-video (no-audio).

  2. Apr 8, 2026

Independent verification finds the "fully open source" claim ahead of reality: working demo, but no downloadable weights, no GitHub repo, no license.

  3. Apr 10, 2026

Press reporting confirms the model is an Alibaba (Taotian Group) project led by Zhang Di, ex-VP at Kuaishou and architect of Kling AI.

  4. Apr 27, 2026

fal launches as the official API partner: pay-per-second pricing, all four endpoints live, playground without an API key.

  5. May–Jun 2026

Hugging Face repos appear under multiple "happyhorse" orgs; Apache-2.0 licensing is reported but a canonical, verified release remains missing.

  6. Jul 17, 2026

Status unchanged at our last check: hosted APIs verified, weight distribution partially verified, license not confirmed. This page updates as things ship.

Why we track this so pedantically

“Open source” is doing heavy marketing work in AI video right now. Whether you can legally fine-tune, self-host, and ship a product on this model depends entirely on artifacts and license text — not launch-page adjectives. When the canonical release lands, this page will say so, with links. Until then, the hosted APIs are the only route we can recommend for production.
